YOUR INFORMATION WORKS FOR YOU

Privacy, Of Course

Ann privately completing a ballot at a voting booth

Your ballot choices are private, and our website never asks what they are. We apply the same respect to the other information you may choose to give us: we use it for its stated purpose, not as something we can turn around and sell.

For instance, an email address lets us verify that an account belongs to you by sending you a security code. It can also help you recover access to our website if you lose your password. Any time we ask for personal information, we’ll explain its purpose before you decide whether to give it to us. We do not interpret having your personal information as permission to misuse it.

Knowing the state or jurisdiction where you register and vote makes a big difference in the quality of the instructions we can give you. Your residence and mailing locations may be different, especially if you are serving in the military, studying, or living away from home, so we keep those ideas separate.

You can also decide what friends may see. You can share a display name instead of your legal name; share an email but not a phone number; let others proudly see that you voted without telling them anything about your ballot. In other words, we use your information for your benefit. Isn’t it refreshing that a website just wants to be hospitable and nice?

The U.S. Election Assistance Commission explains that voter files may record participation, but never contain who a person voted for. Read the EAC explanation.
